Taking better photos

Selfishly, we’d love you to take a few of photos of your work and send them in to be featured on the website. But you may be also be interested in taking photos to use on your own website. Either way – here are a few easy tips to help you take better snaps.

5 TOP TIPS FOR TAKING BETTER PHOTOS

Let’s be honest – we’re not all David Bailey! And whether you’re taking photos with your phone or a decent digital camera it can be tough to get a few photos you can be proud of. But there a a few simple things which we can all do that will improve the quality of the shots you take.

1. TRY TO USE NATURAL LIGHT

Try and use any light coming in through a window (but don’t position yourself so your camera is pointing directly at the window). If you’re working in a space which doesn’t have much natural light – then you can cheat and use a simple table lamp to light the dog.

2. TIDY UP!

It sounds obvious but if you leave mess, hair clippings and tools lying around your photos will suffer – a very quick tidy up will make a huge difference.

3. TRY AND PICK A PLAIN BACKGROUND IF YOU CAN

This can be tricky in a working salon – but have a wander around looking through your camera and see if you can find a spot which has a plain wall as a background.

4. DO A FEW BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS IF YOU CAN

This will show the quality of work – and let people see the transformation of the dog.

5. TAKE AS MANY PHOTOS AS YOU CAN

Always take more photos than you think you need! Dogs will move so you always get a few blurred photos – and different angles and views add a bit more interest and personality to the shots. If you’ve got a friend or colleague at hand ask them to take a quick close up of you and the dog (don’t be shy – you’re showing off your talents!).
