Case Study

“The Pet Spa” launch

What do you do when your successful and thriving pet salon is forced to relocate?  A prospect few business owners would wish to ponder but, a grim reality faced by the management of Harrods former Pet Spa.  Having established a growing list of opulent clientele, the entire Pet Kingdom department was forced to close, ending almost 100 years of tradition.

With more than 2000 local clients, spread across Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Chelsea, the race was on to find new premises in close proximity willing to accept the presence and noise of animals.

With the most popular streets dominated by beautiques, cafes and soft furnishing stores, sanctuary was eventually found in the former Brompton veterinary clinic.  Situated on Fulham Road, just a short walk from the Harrods store, the Pet Spa has successfully relaunched itself as London’s first pet blow dry bar and premier pampering service.  Groomers Gallery went along to speak to its owner Stephanie Mehanna, to find out how things are going.

From the moment you enter the salon, you very quickly realise this is no ordinary grooming shop.

The reception has been designed to indulge the pets’ owner, with complimentary fizz, whilst their four legged friend enjoys one of the many luxury treatments on offer.  The modest retail space adorns an assortment of quality pet accessories and treats, gently reminding you that this is a place where animals come first.  Stephanie comments: ìWe have seen the demand for exemplary levels of pet grooming and innovative spa treatments grow year on year. Blow-dry bars are the new de rigueur for ladies about town, so there is no reason not to let your pet enjoy the same relaxing experience.

The range of treatments is extremely comprehensive and, in addition to regular styling and grooming, includes paw-dicures, facials, massages and mudbaths.

However, the spa also offers day care facilities and specially developed programmes for pet nutrition, weight management and personal fitness.  Stephanie remarks: “One of our most popular services is the ‘Spa Day’, offering full body groom, blue berry facial, fresh breath and coat conditioning treatments.  Pets also receive lunch, essential daily exercise, afternoon tea and a goodie bag.”  It’s the perfect gift for the pet that has everything and is promoted through both Last Minute and Virgin Experiences.  For the most affluent clients, seeking the ultimate in pet lifestyle, Elite Membership is available through monthly subscription.

However, the facilities of the Pet Spa don’t stop here.  Aided by Julie Harris, the business incorporates a training academy with aims to become central London’s hub for teaching excellence.

As one of the founders of the English Groomers Group and, member of the Guild of Master Groomers, Julie is LCGI qualified and highly respected for her work in the industry.  The Pet Spa will deliver training courses for City and Guilds qualifications, in addition to holding regular specialised seminars to share knowledge and experties with fellow groomers.

You leave the Pet Spa with a great sense of pride and community.  Despite the challenges faced in breaking away from Harrods, the staff have worked incredibly hard to remarket themselves and raise the profile of the business.  It’s abundently clear the entire team are not scared of hard work and pull together to deliver impecable customer service.  We wish them every success for the future.
